Philippine Tarsier
Carlito syrichta
The tarsier has eyes so large that each one is bigger than its brain โ proportionally the largest eyes of any mammal โ and they come at a cost it has had to engineer around. The eyeballs are so big and so tightly packed into the skull that they cannot rotate in their sockets at โฆ
Did you know?
- Unlike most primates, tarsiers are entirely carnivorous, feeding exclusively on insects and small vertebrates.
- Each eye is bigger than its brain โ proportionally the largest eyes of any mammal. Those eyes cannot move in their sockets at all, so it rotates its head about 180 degrees instead. It is the only entirely carnivorous primate, eating no fruit or leaves at all. It calls in ultrasound, far above human hearing, staying audible to its own kind while silent to predators.
