- The Pig-nosed Turtle can remain underwater for hours by absorbing oxygen through the lining of its throat, a process known as buccopharyngeal respiration.
- Unlike most turtles, the Pig-nosed Turtle has flipper-like limbs similar to sea turtles, allowing it to swim with remarkable agility. Its pig-like snout helps it breathe at the water's surface while staying mostly submerged. This species is the only living member of its family, Carettochelyidae.
