- Some of the ping-pong tree sponge's relatives can emit bioluminescence, though this particular species is not known to glow.
- Unlike most sponges that filter plankton from water, the ping-pong tree sponge traps and digests small animals such as crustaceans. Its spherical appendages are covered in tiny hooks to ensnare its prey. The species is so rarely seen that much about its biology remains a mystery to scientists.
