- Pink salmon are so closely tied to their two-year lifecycle that odd- and even-year populations in the same river are genetically distinct.
- Pink salmon are known as 'humpback' salmon because males develop a pronounced hump on their back during spawning. They exhibit strict two-year cycles, resulting in some rivers having entirely separate populations that do not interbreed. Despite their small size, they are a vital food source for many marine animals.
