- Despite being North Carolina's state dog, Plott Hounds remain relatively rare outside the southeastern United States.
- The Plott Hound is the only coonhound breed that does not trace its lineage to foxhounds, instead descending from German Hanoverian Schweisshunds. Their brindle coat comes in a variety of shades, and they often have a subtle musky scent unique to the breed.
