Despite their strong association with France, Poodles were originally bred in Germany as water retrievers.
Poodles are one of the most intelligent dog breeds, often ranking second only to the Border Collie. Their iconic 'poodle cut' was originally developed to improve swimming ability and protect vital organs while retrieving in cold water. Poodles have been popular with royalty and notable figures throughout history, including King Louis XVI of France.
