- Unlike pufferfish, porcupinefish have both spines and toxins as dual defense mechanisms, making them especially difficult for predators to eat.
- Porcupinefish can inflate their bodies by swallowing water or air to deter predators. Their tissues contain a potent toxin called tetrodotoxin, making them dangerous to eat. They also have exceptionally strong jaws, capable of crushing the hard shells of crabs and snails.
