- Despite their fearsome reputation, Prairie Rattlesnakes are generally shy and will often try to flee or warn intruders with their rattle before resorting to biting.
- Prairie Rattlesnakes can control the amount of venom they inject, and often deliver 'dry bites' as a warning. Their rattle is made of loosely interlocked segments of keratin, adding a new segment each time they shed their skin.
