Did you know?
- Pronghorns evolved their speed to outrun extinct North American cheetahs, not any current predator.
- The pronghorn herd that summers in Grand Teton makes a round trip of roughly 480 km to the Upper Green River Basin, the longest land migration in the lower 48 states, and it passes through a bottleneck barely 100 m wide at one point. Females carry two fawns and, in utero, the embryos compete lethally: a developing embryo can pierce and kill a rival with a sharp process, so litters are culled before birth. The pronghorn's speed record is verified β it has been clocked running alongside vehicles, and it can outrun any predator it has met in the last 10,000 years by a wide margin.
