- Despite their toxicity, certain species of pufferfish are served as the delicacy 'fugu' in Japan, prepared only by licensed chefs due to the risk of fatal poisoning.
- Pufferfish can inflate themselves to several times their normal size to deter predators. Their bodies contain tetrodotoxin, which is up to 1,200 times more poisonous than cyanide. Some species feature vibrant colors and patterns as a warning to potential predators.
