- Despite their tropical appearance, Purple Gallinules occasionally wander as far north as Canada during migration, surprising birdwatchers with rare sightings.
- Purple Gallinules can deftly walk on floating lily pads to reach seeds and insects, and their brightly colored plumage offers effective camouflage among water plants. They are strong fliers and sometimes turn up far from their usual range during migration.
