- Despite being called a 'desman,' the Pyrenean desman is more closely related to moles than to muskrats or otters.
- Pyrenean desmans use their long, mobile snouts to detect prey underwater by touch and smell. They are excellent swimmers, aided by fringed hind feet and a laterally flattened tail. Unlike most mammals, their nostrils can close while submerged, allowing them to hunt underwater for several minutes at a time.
