- Despite their name and appearance, raccoon dogs are not closely related to raccoons; they are members of the dog family and represent a distinct evolutionary branch.
- Despite the name and the face mask, it is a canid — closer to foxes than to raccoons, which it merely resembles. It is the only dog in the world that hibernates, entering a true winter dormancy. Pairs are monogamous, and the male does a real share of raising the pups. In Japan it is the tanuki, the shape-shifting trickster of folklore.
