- Despite their name and appearance, raccoon dogs are not closely related to raccoons; they are members of the dog family and represent a distinct evolutionary branch.
- Raccoon dogs are capable swimmers and often forage along riverbanks and wetlands. Unlike most wild canids, they form monogamous pairs and both parents participate in raising the young. In some cultures, they are associated with folklore and believed to possess supernatural abilities.
