Did you know?
- Despite their toxicity, some garter snake populations have evolved resistance to the Red-bellied Newtβs poison and are among their few natural predators.
- Red-bellied Newts produce a powerful neurotoxin called tetrodotoxin that makes them unpalatable to most predators. They are known for their unique defensive posture, arching their back and raising their tail to display their bright red belly when threatened. Unlike many newts, Red-bellied Newts are almost entirely terrestrial outside of their breeding season.
