Red-crowned Crane
Grus japonensis
Grus japonensis is the second-rarest crane in the world, with roughly 3,000 birds left, and it exists in two populations with completely different behaviour. The mainland population breeds in the wetlands of the Amur basin on the Russia-China border and migrates south to the Korβ¦
Did you know?
- Despite their size, Red-crowned Cranes can fly long distances and migrate hundreds of kilometers between breeding and wintering grounds.
- Some of the largest wintering flocks are in the Korean Demilitarized Zone, where sixty years of exclusion have accidentally created one of Asia's most important crane refuges. In Japan the bird is the tancho, a symbol of longevity and fidelity, and the folk claim that it lives a thousand years is wrong β the real lifespan is 30 to 40 years in the wild, though captives have exceeded 60. Dancing is not exclusively courtship; cranes of all ages dance, including chicks, and it appears to function partly as a way of discharging tension.
