Red-eyed Tree Frog
Agalychnis callidryas
Agalychnis callidryas sleeps by day plastered to the underside of a leaf, eyes shut and green limbs tucked in so that the animal is a featureless green lump. The startling red eyes, orange feet and blue-and-cream flanks only appear when the frog is disturbed and snaps them open โฆ
Did you know?
- Red-eyed Tree Frog eggs can hatch early if they sense vibrations from approaching predators, allowing tadpoles to escape danger.
- Hatching is mechanical and fast: the embryo releases a cocktail of enzymes from snout glands to weaken the membrane and then thrashes, and the whole escape can be over in under 10 seconds. Males wrestle and call from vegetation over the pond, and a female mates while carrying a male on her back down to the water to absorb the fluid she needs to make the egg clutch. The frog's green skin contains pigment cells that also reflect infrared, and it flattens itself against a leaf to break up its outline, a posture herpetologists call the water-conserving or crypsis pose.
