- Unlike many tortoise species, the Red-footed tortoise is capable of eating animal protein like insects and carrion in addition to plant material.
- Red-footed tortoises can recognize individual humans and other tortoises. They have a specialized beak that allows them to eat a wide variety of foods, including fruits, flowers, fungi, and even carrion. Their vibrant limb coloration is thought to play a role in social signaling during mating.
