Red Junglefowl
Gallus gallus
Gallus gallus is the wild bird from which every chicken on Earth descends β around 26 billion of them, the most numerous bird on the planet by an enormous margin. It still lives in the forests and forest edges of South and Southeast Asia, and it looks like a lean, wary, streamliβ¦
Did you know?
- Every domesticated chicken in the world is descended from the Red Junglefowl.
- The distinctive cock-a-doodle-doo crow of the junglefowl ends abruptly, with a clipped final note, and that difference from the drawn-out domestic crow is one of the field marks used to identify genetically pure wild birds. Junglefowl roosters perform tidbitting, calling a hen over with a specific cluck while pointing at and dropping a food item, and the behaviour is a direct ancestor of what a rooster does in a farmyard. The chicken genome was sequenced in 2004 and was the first bird genome ever completed, precisely because of this bird.
