Did you know?
- Despite their name, red pandas are not closely related to the giant panda and are the only living members of their family, Ailuridae.
- Red Pandas possess a 'false thumb,' an extended wrist bone that functions much like a thumb, aiding in gripping bamboo stalks. They are crepuscular, being most active during the twilight hours of dawn and dusk, which helps them conserve energy and avoid predators. Unlike many mammals, Red Pandas have a reduced ability to digest cellulose, necessitating their high-volume bamboo consumption to meet nutritional needs. Interestingly, they are one of the few carnivorans with a taste for artificial sweeteners, a trait that has been observed in captivity studies.
