Red-shanked Douc
Pygathrix nemaeus
Pygathrix nemaeus has been called the costumed ape: grey body, maroon-red stockings from knee to ankle, white forearms and tail, black hands and feet, a golden face with startlingly blue eyelids. It is a colobine โ a leaf monkey โ endemic to the forests of Vietnam, Laos and a coโฆ
Did you know?
- Despite their eye-catching appearance, Red-shanked Doucs are rarely seen in the wild due to their shy nature and the rapid destruction of their forest habitats.
- Doucs practise mutual grooming and food sharing with unusual tolerance, and adult males will let juveniles take food directly from their hands, which is rare in monkeys. The Son Tra population is one of the very few places on Earth where a critically endangered primate can be watched from a paved road on the edge of a major city. Douc infants are born with a pale face and dark eyes and only acquire the adult colour scheme over roughly ten months.
