- Despite their tiny size, adult Red Velvet Mites can consume prey several times larger than themselves.
- Red Velvet Mites produce a chemical that makes them unpalatable to predators. Their larvae are parasitic, attaching to insects and drawing sustenance before maturing into free-living adults. They are sometimes called 'rain bugs' because they become highly visible after rainfall.
