- The name 'quetzal' comes from Nahuatl, meaning 'precious' or 'sacred', reflecting the bird's importance in ancient Mesoamerican civilizations.
- Male Resplendent Quetzals grow tail feathers that can reach up to 65 cm (over 2 feet) in length. They are the national bird of Guatemala and appear on the country's flag and coat of arms. Quetzals are cavity nesters, often using abandoned woodpecker holes in trees.
