Reticulated Python
Malayopython reticulatus
The reticulated python is the longest snake in the world, routinely exceeding six metres. Two of the most repeated things about it are wrong. It does not suffocate its prey: as the animal exhales, the coils tighten, and the pressure applied is enough to collapse circulation โ blโฆ
Did you know?
- Despite their massive size, Reticulated Pythons are agile swimmers and can travel between islands in their native range.
- It kills by stopping blood flow, not by suffocation โ prey loses consciousness within seconds from circulatory arrest. Its jaw does not "unhinge": the two halves of the lower jaw are joined by an elastic ligament and move independently, walking over the prey. Heat-sensing pits along its lips let it strike accurately in total darkness. It is the longest snake in the world.
