Rhinoceros Iguana
Cyclura cornuta
Cyclura cornuta is one of the rock iguanas of the West Indies, restricted to Hispaniola โ Haiti and the Dominican Republic โ and a few offshore islands, and it is far heavier and more terrestrial than the green iguana most people picture. Adults reach 60 to 136 cm and up to 10 kโฆ
Did you know?
- Unlike many lizards, rhinoceros iguanas can live harmoniously in small groups, especially when raised together from a young age.
- The horns are not weapons in any real sense โ they are display structures, and they are far more pronounced in old males, functioning as an honest signal of age and size. Rhinoceros iguanas can live 50 years or more, and captives have been recorded past 40 with no obvious decline. A closely related form on Navassa Island, Cyclura onchiopsis, was described in the 1880s and is now extinct, one of many lost Caribbean iguanas.
