- All ribbon eels are born male, but can transform into females later in lifeβa rare phenomenon known as sequential hermaphroditism.
- Ribbon eels are one of the few moray eels that display dramatic color and sex changes during their lifetime. Their extended flared nostrils help them sense prey in the dark, complex reef environments. They are sometimes called 'leaf-nosed moray' due to their unique snout shape.
