- Ropefish do not have pelvic fins, a rare trait among modern fish.
- Ropefish can survive out of water for short periods due to their lung-like swim bladders. They are capable of escaping aquariums if not properly covered, using their flexible bodies to slither out. Their prehistoric appearance is due to their primitive lineage, making them living fossils among bony fish.
