- Despite their small size, Russian Tortoises can survive long periods without water by extracting moisture from their food and minimizing water loss.
- Russian Tortoises are expert diggers, capable of creating burrows several feet deep to escape extreme temperatures. Unlike many other tortoise species, they display a burst of activity during spring and early summer, coinciding with their breeding season. Their four-toed front feet are unique among Mediterranean tortoises.
