Did you know?
- The Saiga Antelope once roamed from the British Isles to Alaska during the last Ice Age, but now survives in just a few fragmented populations.
- Only males carry the amber, ridged horns, which is why poaching skews the sex ratio catastrophically and can leave herds with too few males to breed. Saiga calve in enormous synchronised aggregations, with most births falling in a window of about a week, swamping wolves and eagles with more calves than they can possibly take. Newborn saiga are among the fastest-developing ungulates known, able to outrun a human within a few days.
