- Despite its name and salamander-like movements, the Salamanderfish is not related to amphibians but is a true fish with ancient evolutionary origins.
- The Salamanderfish can survive the dry season by aestivating in moist soil; it is the only known freshwater fish in Australia that can move its head from side to side like a salamander. Its ability to tolerate acidic, low-oxygen waters makes it uniquely adapted to its habitat.
