Saltwater Crocodile

The saltwater crocodile is the largest living reptile and has the most powerful bite ever directly measured in any living animal. Its jaw-closing muscles are enormous; its jaw-opening muscles are almost pathetically weak, which is why a band of tape around the snout is enough toβ¦
Did you know?
- A saltwater crocodile can leap its entire body length out of the water to catch prey on low-hanging branches.
- It has the strongest bite ever measured in a living animal β yet its jaw-opening muscles are so weak that tape can hold its mouth shut. It crosses open ocean by surfing surface currents, waiting for a favourable tide rather than swimming. Salt glands on its tongue let it survive at sea. The death roll exists because a crocodile cannot chew β it has to tear pieces off.
