Saola
Pseudoryx nghetinhensis
The saola (Pseudoryx nghetinhensis) was unknown to science until 1992, when researchers surveying Vu Quang in Vietnam's Annamite Mountains found a strange skull with long, straight horns nailed to a hunter's wall. Despite the nickname "Asian unicorn," it is not an antelope but aโฆ
Did you know?
- The Saola was unknown to science until 1992, making it one of the most spectacular zoological discoveries of the 20th century.
- The saola was the first large land mammal new to science in over 50 years, and its discovery came from a skull on a hunter's wall rather than a field sighting. Its scent-gland flaps are so large it can flip them open to expose a paste-covered pad the size of a thumbprint. Conservationists have never managed to keep one alive, so the species is protected almost entirely through blanket snare-removal rather than direct management. Search teams now use environmental DNA from leeches, which retain the blood of the mammals they last fed on, to test whether saola still survive in a valley.
