- The Saola was unknown to science until 1992, making it one of the most spectacular zoological discoveries of the 20th century.
- The Saola is nicknamed the 'Asian unicorn' despite having two horns, due to its mysterious nature and rarity. It is the only species in its genus, making it evolutionarily unique. Saolas have distinctive white facial markings and large scent glands on their snouts.
