Scallop
Pecten maximus
The scallop is a marine bivalve mollusk recognized for its distinctive fan-shaped shell and the ability to swim by rapidly clapping its shells together. Scallops are found in oceans worldwide, particularly along sandy and gravelly sea floors from shallow coastal waters to deep sโฆ
Did you know?
- Unlike most bivalves, scallops are active swimmers, not just sedentary dwellers.
- Scallops can swim by rapidly snapping their shells together, propelling themselves away from predators. They have up to 200 tiny blue eyes lining their mantle, giving them exceptional sensitivity to changes in light and movement. The scallop's shell shape has inspired numerous works of art and architecture, including the emblem of the Camino de Santiago.
