- Scarlet Macaws can mimic human speech and sounds, making them popular (but challenging) pets.
- Scarlet macaws are zygodactyl, with two toes forward and two back, and they use a foot like a hand to hold food, showing a consistent left-footed bias as a group. The enormous bill can shatter a Brazil nut but is delicate enough to preen a mate's eyelid. Chicks hatch naked and blind and take about three months to fledge, one of the longest nestling periods of any parrot. Feathers from scarlet macaws traded north from Mesoamerica have been excavated at Chaco Canyon in New Mexico, more than 2,000 kilometres from the nearest wild birds.
