- Sea squirt larvae possess a backbone-like structure, but lose it as they transform into adults—a key link to the evolutionary origins of vertebrates.
- Sea squirts have a primitive notochord as larvae, making them close relatives of vertebrates. Some species can regenerate body parts if injured. Despite their simple appearance, they have complex chemical defenses that deter predators.
