- The entire global population of the Shenandoah Salamander is estimated to occupy less than 7 square kilometers!
- The Shenandoah Salamander is found nowhere else in the world except for three mountaintops in Virginia. Unlike many salamanders, it does not have an aquatic larval stage and hatches directly into its terrestrial form. Its survival is threatened by competition with the more widespread red-backed salamander.
