- The Shortnose sturgeon can survive in both fresh and brackish water, and some individuals even migrate short distances into the sea.
- Shortnose sturgeon are considered living fossils, having changed little since the time of the dinosaurs. They use sensitive barbels to detect prey along the river bottom. Despite their name, shortnose sturgeon can live for decades, making them among the longest-lived fish in North America.
