- Despite looking ancient, the Shovelnose Sturgeon is one of the more recently evolved sturgeon species in North America.
- Shovelnose Sturgeon are among the few sturgeon species that can be legally fished in some U.S. states. They use their sensitive barbels to detect prey hidden in riverbeds, and their unique shovel-shaped snout helps them root through sediment.
