Did you know?
- Male Siamese fighting fish will fiercely fight other males, sometimes to the death, which is how they earned their name.
- Wild Betta splendens are dull brown with stubby fins; every colour and fin type in the shops is a human creation. The labyrinth organ means a betta will drown if it is prevented from reaching the surface. Male bettas are the sole parents, catching sinking eggs in their mouths and blowing them back into a bubble nest. Fighting fish were a licensed, taxed gambling sport in 19th-century Siam, and the king is said to have kept his own fighting stock.
