Did you know?
- There are fewer than 4,000 Siberian Cranes left in the wild, with the western population numbering less than 20 individuals.
- Siberian cranes feed in deeper water than any other crane, sometimes with the head fully submerged, and dig tubers with a bill edged like a bread knife. The species migrates roughly 5,000 kilometres each way between Arctic Russia and the Yangtze basin. Attempts to save the western population included teaching captive-bred chicks to migrate behind a microlight aircraft. Unusually among cranes, Siberian cranes are highly territorial even on the wintering grounds, and pairs will not tolerate crowding.
