- The musk gland secretion from male Siberian Musk Deer is so prized that it has led to extensive poaching, threatening the species' survival.
- The male's tusks are hinged in loose sockets and can swing slightly, so they fold back a little when the animal chews. Musk deer have no antlers and no facial scent glands, both of which are standard equipment in true deer. Synthetic musk has been available since the 1880s and now dominates perfumery, yet poaching for natural musk continues because of demand in traditional medicine. Musk deer are extraordinary climbers for hoofed animals, ascending leaning trunks and rocky ledges to reach lichen.
