Slow Worm
Anguis fragilis
The slow worm is a legless lizard commonly mistaken for a snake due to its elongated, smooth, and shiny body. Unlike snakes, it has eyelids and can shed its tail as a defense mechanism when threatened. This secretive reptile is most often found under rocks, logs, or leaf litter โฆ
Did you know?
- Some slow worms have been recorded living over 50 years in captivity, making them among the longest-lived lizards in the world.
- Slow worms are actually legless lizards, not snakes, and can blink their eyes. They are capable of shedding their tails to escape predators, a process known as autotomy. Slow worms hibernate during the cold months, often communally in groups underground.
