Slow Worm
Anguis fragilis
The slow worm (Anguis fragilis) is neither slow nor a worm nor a snake: it is a legless lizard, and the giveaways are all visible up close. It has movable eyelids and blinks, which no snake can do; it has small ear openings behind the eye; its tongue is notched rather than deeplβ¦
Did you know?
- Some slow worms have been recorded living over 50 years in captivity, making them among the longest-lived lizards in the world.
- Slow worms blink, and snakes cannot, which is the quickest way to tell them apart. A slow worm can shed its tail to escape, and the regrown stub is shorter and blunter for life. One captive slow worm lived at least 54 years, the longest recorded lifespan of any lizard. Gardeners can attract them by leaving a sheet of tin or a slab on rough grass, under which the animals gather to warm up out of sight.
