- Unlike most owls, female and juvenile Snowy Owls have more extensive dark barring, while adult males can be almost pure white.
- Snowy owls are known to travel great distances outside their breeding season, sometimes appearing as far south as the northern United States. This phenomenon, known as irruption, is often linked to fluctuations in prey populations, particularly lemmings. Unlike many owls, the snowy owl does not have asymmetrical ear openings, relying more on sight than sound to locate prey. Additionally, while other owls have a silent flight due to specialized feather structures, the snowy owl's feathers are not as adapted for silence, reflecting its open habitat where stealth is less critical.
