- The South Island Takahe is one of the rarest birds in the world, with only a few hundred individuals remaining in the wild and in managed reserves.
- Takahē were once thought to be extinct until their rediscovery in 1948. They have a unique, trumpeting call and use their strong beaks to strip seeds from tussock grasses. Unlike many flightless birds, takahē have retained strong legs for running and digging.
