- Unlike many mammals, the Southern Tamandua has no teethβit uses its tongue and strong stomach muscles to process its insect prey.
- Southern Tamanduas can consume up to 9,000 ants and termites in a single day. Their long, sticky tongue can extend up to 40 centimeters to reach insects deep inside nests. Despite their slow appearance, they can defend themselves fiercely with powerful forelimbs and sharp claws.
