- The Spectacled Salamander is one of just two species in its genus, both of which are found only in Italy.
- The Spectacled Salamander exhibits a unique defensive behavior by arching its tail and body to display bright red coloring as a warning to predators. Unlike many salamanders, it does not have aquatic larvae; its young develop entirely on land. Its limited distribution makes it a key species for monitoring forest ecosystem health in Italy.
