- Unlike most mammals, spiny anteaters have no nipples; they secrete milk through specialized patches on their skin for their young to lap up.
- Spiny anteaters are monotremes, one of only five species of egg-laying mammals in the world. Despite their spines, they can burrow rapidly into the ground to escape predators. Their tongue can extend up to 18 cm to capture prey inside nests and logs.
