- Despite their threatening appearance, Spotfin Lionfish are sometimes preyed upon by large groupers and eels that are immune to their venom.
- In the Atlantic it is a devastating invader โ nothing there recognises it as dangerous, and nothing eats it. It herds small fish against the reef with huge fan-like fins and strikes so fast they often never react. Its venomous spines are purely defensive and play no part in hunting. The best control found so far is people eating it: the flesh is excellent and harmless once the spines come off.
