- Despite their loud calls, Spring Peepers are rarely seen due to their small size and excellent camouflage.
- A chorus of these thumbnail-sized frogs is loud enough to be painful from close range and audible more than a kilometre off. The spring peeper survives winter by flooding its blood with glucose and freezing, heart stopped, then thawing in spring. Males call in alternating trios, and the lead caller in each sequence attracts most of the females. Its calling rate depends on temperature so predictably that you can estimate the air temperature from a recording.
