- Despite their massive size, Sri Lankan Elephants are capable swimmers and can cross large rivers in search of food or mates.
- Only about one in fourteen Sri Lankan bull elephants grows tusks, a far lower rate than in India. Up to 300 elephants gather on the dried bed of Minneriya reservoir in the dry season, the biggest aggregation of Asian elephants known. Sri Lanka has the highest rate of human-elephant conflict deaths on Earth, on both sides. The pale pink blotches on the ears and trunk are simply depigmented skin and become more extensive with age.
