- The most famous St. Bernard, named Barry, reportedly saved the lives of more than 40 people during his time as a rescue dog in the early 1800s.
- St. Bernards have been credited with saving over 2,000 lives in alpine rescues. The breed often depicted with a small barrel around its neck is based on legend rather than historical fact. Despite their massive size, St. Bernards are known for being extremely gentle with children.
